Never Say Never...But Find Your Focus In Photography - Rose Klockner Photography

Exploring the Beauty of Central Ohio and Beyond...

I took up photography as my main creative pursuit around the middle of 2009. In 2010 I attended my first photography workshop. I remember coming home and saying to my husband, "I will NEVER be that photographer who has a backpack full of lenses and gear."

Fast forward to 2016…I am that photographer and I am starting to learn to "never say never"...

At various times in the last 7 years, I have said I would never post my photos on social media, never use a tripod, never get up for sunrise shoots, never spend money on lenses, never use Lightroom or Photoshop, never do urban photography, never do HDR, never like black & white, never sell my photos...but I ended up doing all those things and am the better for it.

Along the way though, I have figured out I am not a people photographer. I said "never", but tried it, and didn't enjoy it. I was originally very interested in birds and wildlife, and you will still find some among my "just for fun" photos. What I found was I could not express my creativity in the way I wanted with those subjects. However, I can appreciate the craft and vision of those that have the ability to tackle those subjects well.

I originally wasn't very interested in urban photography, but now consider it my second love after nature. I am not what you'd call a "traditional street photographer", because that's typically more about people, but urban-scapes, urban decay, interesting architecture, and the combining of nature and urban in the same photo all excite me now. Again, I know some amazing street photographers who capture the essence of city living and soul of the people in their shots. I can certainly appreciate their ability to focus on that subject

You will also find I am mostly a "natural light photographer.” I don't say that to brag or to put down those who use flash. It's simply a skill set that I haven't yet chosen to pursue. Given that I also work a full-time job as a software developer, I have to make choices.

I believe the pursuit of photography is all about finding focus, specifically your focus. There are lots of "good things" to make photographs of, but find what's BEST for you. What are you passionate about when you pick up your camera? Maybe it's your children and capturing those memories, Maybe it's weddings and seeing those happy couples start their lives together. Maybe it's sports, events, wildlife. Find what makes you want to make photographs...that should be your focus!

Never say never... at least when it comes to exploring your creativity, but concentrate on what makes you "tick" when it comes to photography...find your focus.

So, with all that in mind, I introduce my new website. This has been a long time coming. I have tried various web builder sites and even wanted to "roll my own." However, given the feature set, the ease of updating with integration with Lightroom, and cost, I have chosen SmugMug. I highly recommend them to other photographers. For those of you who have mentioned possibly wanting to purchase a print or canvas, I now have a link with purchase information and a contact link.
